HD Industrial and HD Exam Latex
These two players are cut from the same cloth – both are able to stay in the game for longer because of their thickness. The HD Industrial latex and HD Exam latex disposable gloves are twins, with the former playing best within the industrial sector and the latter dominating the medical industry. Plus, when it comes to feel and fit, these two latex gloves are all-stars.

LX3 Latex Gloves
If you want that player that can move around the court and provide exceptional dexterity, then you want AMMEX LX3 Latex gloves. They are thinner than their teammates, providing more tactile sensitivity and a full range of motion. Also, these gloves come with a polymer coating for easier donning.

“Team Latex is full of veteran players.”

While some will see their brackets fall to pieces, others will play to win. Why take a gamble when the perfect barrier protection is your best bet? Take your sales to the championship, consider these three top teams when selecting your Final Four.  Next up is Team Nitrile.

Team Nitrile
Sometimes, the game calls for aggressive players and for March Madness: Team Nitrile delivers the high intensity needed to command the court. These gloves play hard to provide exceptional barrier protection, with the best chemical and tear resistance among all glove materials.

Play to Win with Latex Nitrile Vinyl Poly

Orange Nitrile
These disposable gloves are the most aggressive on the team nitrile. With a raised diamond texture to provide superior grip, no oily defenders are stripping the ball or tools away from them. Plus, Orange Nitrile Gloves provide superior chemical resistance to stay in the game longer in automotive, industrial safety and other applications.

Black Nitrile
These gloves have long served as the star player of Team Nitrile, putting both AMMEX and the team on the map. One fan said her favorite feature of Black Nitrile Gloves is the sleek color that “conceals dirt, grease and grime!”

Indigo nitrile
If you need a glove that will box out harmful pathogens or drive to the hole against tough chemicals, then you want Indigo Nitrile Gloves. These gloves play on any court, from the medical to industrial sectors and anything in between. They are also great for tattoo parlors.

“Some gloves play to win and others play to dominate. If you are looking for disposable gloves that will deliver a landslide victory every time, go with Team Nitrile.”

Team Nitrile delivers the high intensity needed to command the court. Next up is Team Vinyl.

Team Vinyl
Do you want a disposable glove lineup with the balanced stats you need to score a bucket for barrier protection every time? If so, look no further than Team Vinyl. These gloves know how to play the game from inside and beyond the arc as well as on offense and defense to keep harmful chemicals and pathogens at bay.

Play to Win with Latex Nitrile Vinyl Poly

Antimicrobial
This player is all about containing the offense, as it inhibits the growth of microorganisms. Antimicrobial Vinyl Gloves, which are a fan favorite in food service and janitorial-sanitation, help prevent cross-contamination by double teaming pathogens on the court.

Stretch synthetic
These gloves, which are also great for food service, have the feel and fit of latex without the allergy concerns. Plus, Stretch Synthetic Vinyl Gloves are a low-cost solution, leaving more in your wallet to bet on brackets.

Blue vinyl
When the defense has a player wrapped up, it can be hard to see an open player for the pass. That is not the case with Blue Vinyl Gloves. With the vibrant color, you will always be able to spot a glove.

“The star players for Team Vinyl are great for food service and janitorial-sanitation applications.”

With Team Vinyl, you get an all-around lineup of barrier protection superstars. The Final Four is not complete without this all-star player – Team Poly.

Team Poly
Some of the best poly disposable gloves are ready to make a slam dunk for barrier protection. Team Poly is known for having a strong bench, with many fresh gloves waiting to be called into the game when a current pair is worn out. This makes them great for food service, where gloves are changed frequently for short duration tasks.

Play to Win with Latex Nitrile Vinyl Poly

Stretch Synthetic
Stretch Synthetic Poly Gloves are the starting point guard for Team Poly because they offer exceptional dexterity compared to regular poly gloves. Plus, they have a light texture for great grip.  These gloves have combined unique characteristics of conforming fit in a low-cost poly glove. These features make the Stretch Synthetic Poly Glove a star player.

Traditional Poly
Traditional Poly Gloves score points by focusing on the fundamentals, but this does not mean they do not stand out on the team, as they are heat sealed rather than dipped like other glove types. They also show off a little style with an embossed texture for additional grip.

“Stretch synthetic and traditional poly are the all-stars of Team Poly.”

Team Poly has the players to defend food products against cross-contamination and rounds out the perfect Final Four of disposable glove players.

March Madness is an unpredictable and fierce competition filled with “cinderella stories” of underdog’s winning against first seed teams. However when it comes to business, having the right partner on the court makes selling gloves a slam dunk.  Fill your bracket with these Final Four – Play to win with Latex, Nitrile, Vinyl and Poly and take your sales to the national championship!   Join our team to become a distributor and play to win by adding AMMEX disposable gloves to your product line-up today.

What are the Benefits of Latex Disposable Gloves?

Latex disposable gloves offer excellent protection and performance in a variety of applications and across a broad range of industries. Latex disposable gloves are a popular choice in both the Industrial and Medical industries and are widely used in applications in medical and dental, child care and senior care, food service and food processing, janitorial and sanitation, automotive and manufacturing industries.  What are the Benefits of Latex Disposable Gloves?

Latex Exam Disposable Gloves are FDA approved for medical use

What are the benefits of latex gloves

Natural rubber latex gloves commonly referred to as latex gloves were first invented in1889 by William Stewart Halsted, the first chief of surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, in order to prevent the medical staff from developing dermatitis from medical chemicals.  Since then, latex gloves have become synonymous with use in the medical industry. Medical grade disposable gloves will have the label “Exam” or “Medical Grade” clearly marked on the packaging which means they are FDA approved for medical use.

Latex naturally offers chemical resistance

What are the benefits of latex gloves?

Natural rubber latex is derived from the sap of the rubber tree and manufactured into a comprehensive barrier protection, known as latex disposable gloves.  Latex naturally offers the benefit of chemical resistance against most acids, bases, chlorine, iodine and formaldehyde. However, heavy-duty latex glove options such as AMMEX GlovePlus HD Latex offers twice the thickness of standard latex disposable gloves and features an extended cuff that provides enhanced protection against bloodborne pathogens and other environmental contaminants.  Latex gloves provide ideal benefits, for many industries, however for some, allergic reactions can result from exposure to latex or natural allergies.  A latex allergy is a reaction to the proteins found in natural rubber latex. If you have a latex allergy, your body mistakes latex for a harmful substance. When latex allergies are of concern, nitrile or vinyl gloves are a suitable alternative, since these gloves are latex-free.

Latex gloves feature better puncture resistance than vinyl gloves.

What are the benefits of latex gloves?

Latex disposable gloves balance price with performance, so they are a popular choice in many industrial applications such as the food service industry.  Food service grade disposable gloves are FDA approved for food service and are made with USDA approved materials. The USDA has established guidelines that govern the materials, manufacturing, and distribution of goods used in foodservice.  Vinyl, nitrile and latex gloves are all suitable for use in the food industry, if they are FDA approved for food service and if the features of the glove match the application, for example –

AMMEX Gloveworks Heavy Duty Latex disposable gloves are ideal for food service applications because they are :

  • FDA approved for food service.
  • Heavy duty, premium grade industrial latex that offers twice the thickness as standard latex gloves.
  • Enhanced puncture resistant, giving each glove a longer duration of use, so glove changes are less frequent during tough jobs.
  • More elastic than nitrile and feature better puncture resistance than vinyl.

Latex gloves are used in industrial applications

What are the benefits of latex gloves?

In recent years, industrial grade latex gloves, have gained popularity in applications, such as automotive and manufacturing, food service and food processing and Janitorial and sanitation.  Latex disposable gloves that are industrial grade, provide optimal benefits of durability, comfort, fit, and dexterity.  Industrial Grade gloves are suitable for industrial applications but do not meet the requirements needed to be labeled as exam gloves or medical gloves. Industrial grade gloves will typically have the label “Industrial” clearly marked on the packaging.  Latex gloves such as AMMEX LX3 Latex is a standard grade industrial latex glove, ideal for general purpose, short duration applications in industrial work applications, where frequent glove changes are required.  These gloves offer the advantage of wearing a light-weight glove with enhanced tactile sensitivity. Latex gloves balance price with performance and has many benefits to offer in the industrial sector.

Latex offers the best fit, feel and dexterity

What are the Benefits of Latex Disposable Gloves?

One key characteristic of latex is that it closely conforms to the hand, to offer the best fit and feel. This gives users more dexterity while wearing the gloves. In the dental industry, for instance, dentists and dental assistants handle small objects, such as tooth caps and tiny packets of tooth polish. If they are wearing gloves that loosely conform to their hands, they may have some trouble grabbing these items. Latex gloves such as, AMMEX GlovePlus HD Latex Exam Gloves, provide the dexterity and tactile sensitivity required for this and similar tasks.

What are the Benefits of Latex Disposable Gloves?   As you can see they are versatile and their benefits are used across a wide range of industries.  For countless industries, latex gloves are an ideal choice. Looking for a great glove brand of disposable latex gloves? AMMEX has you covered. AMMEX offers an excellent selection of both industrial grade latex and medical grade options. Help Prevent Norovirus Outbreaks in the Food Service Industry

The Norovirus is commonly associated with wide-spread illness that occurs on cruise ships, but those account for only about 1% of all reported norovirus outbreaks. Recent news of Norovirus affecting a popular restaurant chain confirms that it can occur anywhere people gather or food is served.  Infected people can spread norovirus to others through close contact or by contaminating food and surfaces. Food service workers who have the norovirus can contaminate food and make many people sick. However, there are ways to help prevent norovirus outbreaks in the food service industry such as following food service safety practices like proper barrier protection and hygiene policies.

A Boston-area Chipotle has been shut down temporarily after an employee was diagnosed with norovirus and two others reported similar symptoms,CBS Boston reports.

News such as this highlights the facts that the Norovirus, is highly contagious – often spread by infected food service workers – and immediate action should be taken to help prevent norovirus outbreaks in the food service industry.

Consider these Norovirus statistics from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Help-Prevent-Norovirus-Outbreaks-in-the-Food-Service-IndustryAbout 20 million people get sick from norovirus each year

Help-Prevent-Norovirus-Outbreaks-in-the-Food-Service-Industry#1 cause of outbreaks from contaminated food in the US.

Help-Prevent-Norovirus-Outbreaks-in-the-Food-Service-IndustryInfected food workers cause about 70% of reported outbreaks

Norovirus outbreaks from contaminated food are common in the food service industry because food service industry workers often go to work when they are sick and may contaminate food.  Of outbreaks caused by infected food workers, 54% involve food workers touching ready-to-eat-foods with their bare hands. Ready-to-eat foods are foods that are ready to be served without additional preparation, such as washed raw fruits and vegetables for salads or sandwiches, baked goods, or items that have already been cooked.

Observations of food service workers have shown that they practice proper hand washing only 1 in 4 times.

Norovirus is hard to kill and stays on food, kitchen surfaces, and utensils. It can remain infectious on foods even at freezing temperatures and until heated above 140°F and can stay on countertops and serving utensils for up to 2 weeks.  Norovirus can also be resistant to many common disinfectants and hand sanitizers.

What can be done to help prevent norovirus outbreaks in the food service industry?

Food service industry can

  • Adhere to food safety laws and regulations.
  • Certify kitchen managers and train food service workers in food safety practices.
  • Establish policies that require workers to stay home while sick with vomiting and diarrhea for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.
  • Foster a work environment that encourages workers to stay home when sick, by considering such measures such as paid sick leave and a staffing plan that includes on-call workers.

Food service workers can

  • Tell a manager when sick with symptoms of norovirus such as vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Wash hands carefully and often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom.
  • Use single-use disposable gloves to avoid touching ready-to-eat foods with bare hands.
  • Regularly clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces and frequently touched objects, using a chlorine based product or other sanitizer approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for use against norovirus.
  • Immediately block off, clean, and disinfect areas where there has been a vomiting or diarrheal incident.
  • Carefully wash fruits and vegetables and avoid serving undercooked (below 140°F) oysters and other shellfish.
  • Visit www.FoodSafety.gov for the latest information.

Due to the nature of the food service industry – where workers directly handle food  – disposable glove usage in this sector is common. The U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) requires all employees to wash their hands if they make contact with food. However, when it comes to the prevention of norovirus, food service disposable gloves are the most effective barrier protection according to the CDC – it helps to prevent the spread of the norovirus.

The CDC strongly recommends food workers use disposable gloves to avoid touching food with bare hands.

Food service disposable gloves, such as polyethylene gloves commonly referred to as poly gloves are a popular choice in the food service industry.  Disposable poly gloves such as, AMMEX Poly are ideal for food service since they are single-use and workers tend to switch between various light-duty tasks, and they need a disposable glove that can accommodate their workflow.

Another popular single-use disposable glove for food service is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), also known as vinyl.  Disposable gloves such as AMMEX AntiMicrobial Vinyl are single use, FDA approved for food service and they contain an antimicrobial agent to help inhibit the growth of microorganisms.

Regardless of which disposable gloves food service workers use, poly, vinyl, and latex disposable gloves are a smart investment for the food service industry.  Food service disposable gloves can help prevent norovirus outbreaks in the food service industry – protecting workers and consumers against foodborne illness – And helps to protect businesses against tarnished reputations and decreased profits when restaurants have to close due to outbreaks.  Thousands of distributors rely on AMMEX to supply their customers in the food service industry with high-quality AMMEX disposable gloves. Contact us today to become an AMMEX distributor and learn how we help our distributors grow their glove sales on average of 31%!

What are the Benefits of Disposable Nitrile Gloves?

Disposable nitrile gloves offer superior performance in a variety of work applications and across a broad range of industries. Nitrile disposable gloves are a popular alternative to latex gloves in many professions. There are lots of reasons why disposable nitrile gloves are the best choice for tough jobs.  What are the benefits of disposable nitrile gloves?

Nitrile gloves are highly puncture resistant – three to five times more so than latex.

What are the benefits of nitrile disposable gloves?

Many professions rely on the durability of Nitrile gloves, especially when exposure to blood borne pathogens and other environmental contaminants are of concern. Nitrile gloves, such as, AMMEX Powder Free Indigo Nitrile Exam, are FDA approved for medical use and are highly puncture resistant providing excellent durability, and barrier protection. These gloves are powder free, so you don’t have to worry about messy powder when working with fresh adhesives or ink. AMMEX Powder Free Indigo Nitrile gloves are commonly used by medical and dental professionals, tattoo artists, spas and salons, and in laboratory settings. These gloves are also FDA approved for food service.  AMMEX nitrile exam gloves are perfect for doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, tattoo artists, dentists, veterinary, and laboratory workers.

They provide a stronger barrier of protection and offer greater chemical resistance.

What are the benefits of nitrile gloves?

Nitrile rubber is more resistant than natural rubber to chemicals, oils and acids, and has superior strength. Nitrile disposable gloves such as AMMEX Gloveworks Heavy Duty Orange Nitrile gloves, are three times more puncture-resistant than latex and are more chemical resistant than latex or vinyl. In fact, nitrile is recommended for employees working with 67 percent of chemicals, 28 percent more than latex or vinyl.  Heavy Duty Orange Nitrile gloves are one of AMMEX’s premium glove products – ideal for many industries and situations, such as automotive, manufacturing, janitorial, plumbing, paint shops, heavy duty and industrial applications. When it comes to versatility, it is hard to beat AMMEX’s Heavy Duty Orange Nitrile Gloves!

Nitrile Gloves are latex-free, so anyone with a latex allergy can work safely and comfortably.

What are the benefits of nitrile disposable gloves?

Nitrile gloves have become the preferred synthetic alternative to natural rubber and are ideal when latex allergies are of concern. More medical professionals rely on the latex-free dependability of Nitrile gloves. Exam grade disposable gloves, such as AMMEX powder free nitrile gloves, are FDA approved for medical use and provides excellent strength, durability, and barrier protection against bloodborne pathogens and other environmental contaminants. The micro-roughened finish on the surface of the glove gives you a non-slip grip when gloves are either wet or dry.  These nitrile gloves are perfect for medical and dental professionals, child care and senior care.

Nitrile conforms to the shape of your hand, providing a snug and comfortable fit. What are the benefits of nitrile disposable gloves?

As body heat warms nitrile gloves, they conform closely to the hand for a better, comfortable fit.  Nitrile gloves such as AMMEX GlovePlus Black Nitrile, a premium industrial grade standard nitrile glove, are 50% thicker than standard nitrile gloves for added durability so that each pair of gloves lasts longer while you’re working.  They are more elastic than vinyl and can be used in a variety of applications, including automotive, manufacturing, janitorial and sanitation services, the industrial, safety and chemical industries and are FDA approved for food service.

A lower resistance to friction makes nitrile gloves, easier to don and doff.

What are the benefits of nitrile disposable gloves?

Nitrile rubber gloves alone have a lower coefficient of friction, making them easier to don and doff.  However, during the disposable glove manufacturing process, finishes are applied, allowing glove users to don and doff with ease, creating a seamless experience as they change gloves.  When the finish is applied to nitrile gloves it provides the following features and benefits:

  • Powder makes the gloves easier to don by absorbing excess moisture on the hands.
  • Polymer coating makes the gloves easier to slip onto the hands with a slicker finish.
  • Chlorination reduces the tackiness of the material and makes it softer.

Industries such as food processing and food service, frequently change gloves. General purpose gloves such as, AMMEX X3 Blue Nitrile gloves, offers seamless glove changes, which is perfect for short duration applications where frequent glove changes are required.  This nitrile glove is an industrial grade, blue, disposable glove commonly used in industries where dexterity is needed, such as, for food processing, janitorial, manufacturing, automotive and industrial applications. X3 gloves are also FDA approved for food service.

Nitrile gloves are versatile and their benefits are used across a large spectrum of industries. For countless industries, nitrile gloves are an ideal choice because they can offer numerous more benefits than either latex or vinyl for many applications.

Instead, the default news feed is now comprised of content that Facebook thinks that you will like, based on your interactions with content from that author in the past, and interactions by your friends with that content.

This puts a tremendous premium on posting engaging content that will get comments and likes and shares. If you’re not paying attention to your content engagement scores within your Facebook analytics, start doing so now, and testing content types to see what works best for your brand.

Regardless of the reason, now is the time for business owners to embrace and really start using Facebook for their business. Obviously, if you are a business owner, the quality of your product is important, but at the end of the day, your businesses survival depends on sales.  Why not tap into the huge potential customer base that Facebook represents?   1.5 billion Facebook users are waiting for you.

Don’t be Left Behind: Why Facebook is Key for Business

Even though Facebook is now a household name, It’s been difficult for some businesses to understand why they need to embrace Facebook and are at risk of being left behind. If you find yourself still ignoring Facebook for business or thinking that “Facebook is a waste of time.” or “It doesn’t seem like a professional social network.” or “My kids are on Facebook, why should I use Facebook for business?”  Then, you may want to reconsider.  Here’s some influential statistics that just might change your mind!  Don’t be left behind: why Facebook is key for business.

  • 1.5 billion active global users on Facebook
  • 4.5 billion likes on Facebook generated daily
  • 16 million local business pages on Facebook
  • 2 billion connections between local business and consumers
  • 47% of Americans report that Facebook has a greater impact on their purchasing decision than any other social media platform

Still not convinced?  Then consider this game changer that Facebook recently introduced:  Real-time search.

In October, Facebook added the ability to search within public posts, boosting the social network’s utility as a source of real-time information. Facebook Search will return anything you’re allowed to see from its 2 trillion posts. That includes public posts by all people and pages, not just your friends and “Pages you Like”, as before.  The personalized results will be segmented to highlight posts from trusted news sources, followed by people in your network, lists of the most popular links or quotes about a topic, and then strangers (potential customers).

Don’t get left behind – Your Competitors are on Facebook. Every day that passes, the more your competition promotes across social media.

Not only could Real-time search make Facebook a place that people and business look for perspectives on the news, it could in turn inspire more people to post publicly about what’s happening in the world, since there will be more ways to discover that content than in the feed.  Plus, this update gives Facebook a comprehensive internal search engine. Before, it was good for nostalgia, looking up funny things friends said or “cool photos” they posted. Now, it’s a discovery engine for real-time news that’s just slipped out of the future into the present.

So what does all this mean to a business owner?

This Facebook change has tremendous implications for search engine optimization and your business, since your content shared on Facebook about your brand might now show up on the first page of Google search results for your company name. It is a tremendous opportunity to get your brand or company in front of a 1.5 billion user social media platform and more access to this content will cause people to share more of it.

With facts like these why wouldn’t your business be on Facebook?  It’s not to late to embrace and leverage Facebook for business. Every single day that passes the more your competition promotes across social media. This wave of social media marketing is here to stay… and if you don’t jump on now you are hampering your chances of longevity online – which is where business happens.

We all know the saying, “It is better to give than to receive.” While it is true that giving really benefits those in need, did you know studies show that giving is truly good for the giver too?  As millions come together to celebrate the holidays, let’s take a look at how giving not only adds richness to our lives but surprisingly improves our health. Here’s 5 Amazing Health Benefits of Giving

“Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.” Jim Rohn –

1. Greater Happiness

Biologically, giving can create a “warm glow,” stimulating regions in the brain associated with pleasure, trust and connection with other people.  In a 2006 study, researchers from the National Institutes of Health studied the functional MRIs of subjects who gave to various charities. They found that giving stimulates the mesolimbic pathway, which is the reward center in the brain, releasing endorphins and creating what is known as the “helper’s high.” And like other highs, this one is addictive, too.

2. Stronger Heart
There is significant evidence to show that when people perform charitable acts, they tend to have lower blood pressure. In one study, researchers measured people’s blood pressure before and after performing an act of kindness then before and after spending money on themselves. Findings showed that those who performed a good deed had lower blood pressure after; whereas, the group that spent money on themselves, did not show a reduction in blood pressure.  While the reasons are not entirely clear, it is believed that altruistic acts decrease stress; increase levels of the hormone oxytocin, which drops blood pressure; and in some instances is a catalyst for physical activity such as fundraising walks.

3.  Immune Booster
Kind deeds decrease stress and promote a feeling of wellbeing, both of which boost our immune system. Specifically, scientists’ studies indicate that the levels of T cells—a special immune system cell—increase in our body. What this boils down to is a better defense against germs and, even, cancer because our immune system fights cancerous growth. Additionally, altruistic acts have been shown to decrease inflammation, which is the underlying cause of a number of chronic illnesses and can actually provoke cancerous growths.

4. Pain Reliever
Acts of giving and kindness can help to suppress physical pain by releasing endorphins—our body’s natural pain reliever. In one study, when chronic-pain sufferers volunteered to lead discussion groups for pain sufferers or make weekly calls to check in on patients, their own pain levels decreased. When your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.  Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as “euphoric.” That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.

5. Longer Life
According to a study from University of California, Berkeley, study, people who were 55 and older who volunteered for two or more organizations were 44 percent less likely to die over a five-year period than those who didn’t volunteer — even accounting for many other factors including age, exercise, general health and negative habits like smoking.  In a 2003 University of Michigan study, a researcher found similar numbers in studying elderly people who gave help to friends, relatives and neighbors — or who gave emotional support to their spouses — versus those who didn’t.

As we look through our holiday lists, we should add daily acts of “giving, generosity, and kindness” to our lists as it not only helps others, but as studies show, giving helps our health too! It looks like science has proven that it is indeed better to give than to receive.

Essential Safety Tips for Working in Cold Conditions

Despite some unseasonably warm weather, winter starts today. Don’t be fooled, this year’s El Niño among the strongest on record, is expected to really pack a winter punch across the country. Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center issued the U.S. Winter Outlook favoring cooler and wetter weather in Southern Tier states with above-average temperatures most likely in the West and across the Northern Tier.  “A strong El Niño is in place and should exert a strong influence over our weather this winter,” said Mike Halpert, deputy director, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

While the danger from winter weather varies across the country, nearly all Americans, regardless of where they live, are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives. Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

Winter weather can be severe, unpredictable and a hazard, especially to thousands of workers who are exposed to cold outdoor work environments in the winter months.  A number of industries and occupations involve substantial outdoor cold exposure. Some workers may be required to work outdoors in cold environments for extended periods, for example, snow cleanup crews, sanitation workers, police officers and emergency response and recovery personnel, like firefighters, and emergency medical technicians.  However cold outdoor work is not the only hazardous work environment.

Many indoor workers — such as those in the food processing industry, cold storage industry, supermarkets or in the transportation chain — also can be negatively impacted by cold work environments if not properly protected and trained.  Anyone working in a cold environment may be at risk of cold stress, frostbite or even hypothermia.  The following tips will help workers understand the dangers of working in cold temperatures and how it can be prevented.

As with any workplace hazard, prevention is key to protecting workers and preventing cold-related injuries.

When working in cold temperatures, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following essential safety tips for working in cold conditions:
  • Wear layers of loose clothing and avoid tight clothing, as it can restrict blood circulation.
  • Ensure the ears, face, hands and feet are properly covered.
  • Wear waterproof and insulated boots.
  • Move into warm locations during breaks.  If working in remote areas with no access to heat, use single use air activated heat packs to provide warmth for your hands and feet.
  • Include a thermometer and chemical hot packs in your first aid kit.
  • Workers should watch out for one another. Monitor your physical condition as well as your co-workers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when exposed to cold temperatures, the body starts to lose heat faster than it can produce it. If this happens for a prolonged period of time, the cold eventually will use up all of the body’s energy, resulting in hypothermia, or an abnormally low body temperature. Symptoms vary from person to person, but early signs of hypothermia include shivering, fatigue and confusion. More advanced symptoms include blue skin, dilated pupils and loss of consciousness.  Studies suggest that more people are dying from hypothermia in the United States, a new government report shows, raising fresh worries for a nation that is facing the strongest El Niño, in twenty years.

Heavy snowfall and extreme cold storms can quickly immobilize an entire region.  The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the “Deceptive Killers” because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Another words, winter storm fatalities can be caused by traffic accidents on icy roads and from hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold. No matter the circumstance, it is important to be prepared for winter weather before it strikes.

Preparation and prevention is the key to avoiding cold-related workplace hazards. Employers should take the steps now to ensure a safe workplace for workers exposed to cold conditions.  AMMEX can help – We proudly supply a wide selection of disposable gloves and personal protection equipment to thousands of distributors in a variety of industries.
