Succession Tips from Inc. Interview with AMMEX Founder

We are proud to share some words of wisdom from our founder Fred Crosetto, Chief Energizing Officer of AMMEX Corporation and AMMEX iSupport, as featured in the recent inc.com article: 4 Ways to Develop Great Leaders. In the article, Fred discusses his succession planning strategies and how he successfully removed himself from daily operations by developing smart, effective leaders.

In business, preparation and planning are the main components of a successful company, but when it comes to succession planning, many senior executives struggle with being able to replace themselves. Finding the next great leader of your business is an important challenge that involves too many variables that busy leaders often struggle to find time to consider. The result is often a reactive process that can lead to a bad hiring decision.  With the right planning and approach, succession can be a seamless transition that benefits the company and its current and future leaders.

“At AMMEX, developing great leaders is a core part of what we do and is one of the ways we have been named to the Puget Sound Business Journal “Top 100 Fastest Growing, Privately Held Companies” a total of eight times.”

How do we do it?
The foundation of AMMEX’s success is built upon key principles that drive us to be better – we all strive to be better every day, and we hold one another accountable to this goal. Developing great leaders is a core part of that success.  In the recent Inc.com article, 4 Ways to Develop Great Leaders; Fred explains how he successfully removed himself from daily operations by developing smart, effective leaders. “These strategies have allowed him to successfully groom the new President of AMMEX, Keyo Gold, and complete the transition in less than two years.”

AMMEX Succession Planning

Four Ways to Develop Great Leaders

1. Recruit a team of A-players.
2. Develop future leaders from the inside.
3. Let young leaders fail safely.
4. Introduce leaders to great thinkers.

How did he do it?
In the interview with Inc.com, our Founder discusses his approach to growing a successful commodities based disposable glove company over the last 28 years.  Succession planning and growing future leaders as the core driver of that success.  When it came time for our founder’s succession as CEO of AMMEX he met the challenge by developing team members from the inside through leadership, coaching and strategy.  Listen to this recent podcast episode from YPO 10 Minute Tips From the Top host Kevin Daum, who recently interviewed Crosetto, a fellow member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO).

“A-players are hard to find and hard to keep, It took me a little bit longer than most people to figure this out, but it’s better to get really great people to work and come in and take things on,” noted Crosetto.

How can you do it?
Start by recruiting a team of A-players by looking for passion in people.  If you only surround yourself with passionate people driven to be better, then you’ll have a number of potential options to develop into the next strong leader. Turn to the young leadership internally to drive the future of the company, coach and train them by introducing them to great thinkers. Allow your young leaders to fail safely and…….continue reading the full article from Inc.com.

5 Amazing Health Benefits of Giving

We all know the saying, “It is better to give than to receive.” While it is true that giving really benefits those in need, did you know studies show that giving is truly good for the giver too?  As millions come together to celebrate the holidays, let’s take a look at how giving not only adds richness to our lives but surprisingly improves our health. Here’s 5 Amazing Health Benefits of Giving

“Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.” Jim Rohn –

1. Greater Happiness

Biologically, giving can create a “warm glow,” stimulating regions in the brain associated with pleasure, trust and connection with other people.  In a 2006 study, researchers from the National Institutes of Health studied the functional MRIs of subjects who gave to various charities. They found that giving stimulates the mesolimbic pathway, which is the reward center in the brain, releasing endorphins and creating what is known as the “helper’s high.” And like other highs, this one is addictive, too.

2. Stronger Heart
There is significant evidence to show that when people perform charitable acts, they tend to have lower blood pressure. In one study, researchers measured people’s blood pressure before and after performing an act of kindness then before and after spending money on themselves. Findings showed that those who performed a good deed had lower blood pressure after; whereas, the group that spent money on themselves, did not show a reduction in blood pressure.  While the reasons are not entirely clear, it is believed that altruistic acts decrease stress; increase levels of the hormone oxytocin, which drops blood pressure; and in some instances is a catalyst for physical activity such as fundraising walks.

3.  Immune Booster
Kind deeds decrease stress and promote a feeling of wellbeing, both of which boost our immune system. Specifically, scientists’ studies indicate that the levels of T cells—a special immune system cell—increase in our body. What this boils down to is a better defense against germs and, even, cancer because our immune system fights cancerous growth. Additionally, altruistic acts have been shown to decrease inflammation, which is the underlying cause of a number of chronic illnesses and can actually provoke cancerous growths.

4. Pain Reliever
Acts of giving and kindness can help to suppress physical pain by releasing endorphins—our body’s natural pain reliever. In one study, when chronic-pain sufferers volunteered to lead discussion groups for pain sufferers or make weekly calls to check in on patients, their own pain levels decreased. When your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.  Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as “euphoric.” That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.

5. Longer Life
According to a study from University of California, Berkeley, study, people who were 55 and older who volunteered for two or more organizations were 44 percent less likely to die over a five-year period than those who didn’t volunteer — even accounting for many other factors including age, exercise, general health and negative habits like smoking.  In a 2003 University of Michigan study, a researcher found similar numbers in studying elderly people who gave help to friends, relatives and neighbors — or who gave emotional support to their spouses — versus those who didn’t.

As we look through our holiday lists, we should add daily acts of “giving, generosity, and kindness” to our lists as it not only helps others, but as studies show, giving helps our health too! It looks like science has proven that it is indeed better to give than to receive.

AMMEX In the News – Fortune Magazine

Words from our CEO, Fred Crosetto:
Entering a new market is probably the last thing anyone wants to hear, but I would argue it’s one of the best strategies if you are going in with a partner.  At AMMEX, the majority of our market entry strategies have had us in control both strategically and operationally.   However, some of our biggest partnership successes have come through relinquishing tactical decisions to our partners and letting them run with it. They know the local culture, customs, angles and they can simply operate more fluidly than a foreign company could hope to do.

This approach is not for the faint of heart and if one relishes micro managing things & people, avoid this at all costs.”

At AMMEX, our experience has been that if you elect to partner with a group overseas you need to let it go so they can show you what they can do!

AMMEX has expanded into an international company using these methods. AMMEX iSupport was created for the purpose of providing North American & Australian companies with a DEDICATED, FLEXIBLE & SCALABLE platform that they can customize to drive their global expansion.   Everyone wants access to a market entry strategy that is “low risk” & “high trust”.

How the AMMEX Philosophy Leads to Success

Have you ever wondered how some companies seem to effortlessly maintain a culture of high quality and hard work? The truth is, it is not entirely effortless. To a certain extent, producing great products and achieving long-lasting success is all about maintaining a routine, establishing the right belief system and holding staff accountable.

At AMMEX, our business philosophy is a core part of what we do. Following an established set of principles is one of the ways we have been named to the Puget Sound Business Journal “Top 100 Fastest Growing, Privately Held Companies” a grand total of eight times. How do we do it? We all strive to be great employees every day, and we hold one another accountable for this goal. Here is a closer look at how we approach each day here at AMMEX:
Our core ideologies
AMMEX stands by four core ideologies as an integral part of our day-to-day operations.
  • We are aggressive in pursuing opportunities: If something is worth doing, it is worth doing right. If we see an opportunity, we will go after it with everything we have got.
  • We are consistent in products and processes: Consistency is the key to success. Figure out the best way and repeat the process.
  • We are approachable and a pleasure to do business with: People like to work with partners they like, so we aim to make the most of every interaction.
  • We believe that simple is good: Why build a complicated process? Keep it simple and do it right.

Morning huddles
The huddle was introduced in football as a way to make brief contact before a strategic play. Not surprisingly, many companies have adapted this idea to business as well, and AMMEX is one of them. Football and business are a lot alike. In football, every player has a unique role in the play that follows. Business is the same way. Taking a moment each day to huddle is our way of making sure the day goes smoothly and everyone knows how his or her role contributes to the bottom line. We take this time to share important numbers and metrics and any other communications

“Achievement is easier when you set measurable goals.”

Reporting and visibility
It is hard to maintain a truly high quality business without transparency. We value transparency and communication at AMMEX, so we give all employees real-time access to sales, revenue and gross profit numbers. We also have this information moving on LCD screens in our sales pits where everyone sees them. This way, everyone knows he or she is part of one team and are striving toward the same goals.

Setting goals
Achievement is easier when you set measurable goals. At AMMEX, we set the “AMMEX Top 5″ objectives for each year and within that year, the “Top 3″ goals for each quarter. Furthermore, each AMMEX employee has his or her own three objectives each quarter that align to those set by the business. That is quite a few goals! But setting these targets helps us focus on results and lets each employee know his or her actions have a positive impact on the business. Ultimately, every employee contributes to AMMEX’s success.

We believe in our culture of honesty and hard work, and it has helped us grow together since 1988. Success is not just about revenue growth; it is about setting goals, remaining accountable and aiming to grow together.

AMMEX: From Start-Up to Industry Leader

Where a company goes all depends on where it starts, and we at AMMEX come from one man’s goal to provide comprehensive barrier protection to the world. Expanding from a small office to a headquarters in Kent, Washington, production facilities in Asia and distribution centers in Toronto and Atlanta, AMMEX is one of the fastest-growing glove suppliers.

How it all began
Like many businesses that started out small, AMMEX had inauspicious beginnings. Fred Crosetto, a 24-year-old law student from Seattle, started the company in March 1988. While Crosetto had a clear goal in mind, which was to address a growing demand for industrial barrier protection and infection control products, he did not understand what it would truly take to build an international company between the U.S. and Asia.

Rapidly expanding into a leading glove supplier
The spring of 1990 began a string of firsts for AMMEX.

Crosetto opened the retail business in May 1990, sold 50 cases during the first month and did all this by making deliveries with a borrowed van. He also ferried gloves in a 1989 Nissan Sentra, 17 cases at a time.

AMMEX’s first office/warehouse opened in early 1992, and in early 1993, AMMEX received the delivery of our first full ocean container

Where AMMEX lives today
In July 1994, AMMEX acquired Sime Health, a 12,000-square-foot facility located in Seattle. Not only did business double overnight, but this first acquisition lead to what would become our first headquarters in Kent.

While our headquarters is in Kent, AMMEX now has an international presence. With Crosetto leading the way with an attitude of “it can be the right time and the right place, but you still have to do something about it,” AMMEX opened warehouses in Atlanta in 1996 and another in Toronto in 2009. AMMEX continued to grow internationally when we opened our Shanghai operations, which included Shanghai Intco Medical Supply, in January 2005. We also have our AMMEX Weida Health and Safety Supply business Xiantao, Hubei, China.

“AMMEX has grown from a small operation to an international business.”

AMMEX is now a leading distributor in health, hygiene and safety supplies in the China market. Further expansion has included production, procurement and other facilities across Malaysia and the Philippines. One of AMMEX’s strengths is a deep and extensive network of suppliers across China and Southeast Asia. These relationships have and will continue to play a key role as the global growth of this market is only increasing.

AMMEX has grown significantly since our small office in Bellevue, Washington. We have been listed on Washington’s 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies an astounding eight times; are one of the largest privately held companies in the state of Washington; and have been voted one of Seattle Business magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work for. However, we have not forgotten our founder’s initial mission. In these past 27 years, we expanded our product lines and international presence and are proud suppliers of a wide selection of disposable gloves and personal protection equipment to thousand of distributors in a variety of industries around the world.

2014 Person of the Year: Barrier Protection Saves Lives

Equipped with barrier protection, the Ebola fighters quieted the epidemic, earning the title of Time Magazine’s 2014 Person of the Year.

This distinction did not go to an individual, but instead, recognized the many medical professionals who risked their personal safety to help combat the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that turned into an epidemic. Media outlets have likened these individuals to brave heroes facing deadly villain.

“Proper barrier protection helped Ebola fighters slow the virus’s spread and earn the title of Time Magazine’s 2014 Person of the Year. “

Their main defense included intense containment protocols and barrier protection in the form of disposable gloves, hoods and other items. With the epidemic waning, it is clear that these measures have been successful in quelling this international threat.

In addition to being recognized as Time Magazine’s 2014 Person of the Year, The White House congratulated these courageous men and women for their achievement. While the Ebola epidemic is an extreme case, it demonstrates the importance of having the right personal protective equipment.

Whether you are in the ranks of Ebola fighters, a dentist or even performing an oil change, make sure you have the right gloves for the job.

Know Your Glove Materials: Part II Latex

When you think of a disposable glove, a latex glove is traditionally what comes to mind. This type of glove has been used in various industries for years for both medical and industrial applications. Let’s take a look into the making and success behind wholesale latex gloves.

Many consumers are familiar with exam-grade latex gloves, which are common in the health care facilities. However, even in this familiar setting, latex is being used less often because of allergic reactions that can result from the material. In some cases, the resulting reaction can be as minor as skin irritation known as dermatitis, but it can lead to anaphylaxis in more serious cases.

Latex allergies stem from the material’s proteins, a result of its origins.

What is latex?
Latex material is a natural rubber that is derived from the sap of the rubber tree. The sap is a polymer, which means it is created from the bonding of many single molecules known as monomers. It must be chemically treated within a short time of being tapped from the tree or else it will harden.

Once the sap is collected, it is turned from a sticky substance into the elastic material consumers are familiar with through a complex process that includes a step called vulcanization. This step, which involves heating the sap, was first coined by Charles Goodyear, whose surname is used for tire and rubber manufacturer Goodyear.

There are also synthetic rubber materials. However, these are not the same as natural latex.

“Latex material is a natural rubber that is derived from the sap of the rubber tree.”

What are the benefits of latex gloves?
One key characteristic of latex is it closely conforms to the hand to offer the best fit and feel. This gives users more dexterity while wearing the gloves. In the dental industry, for instance, dentists may need to handle small objects, such as tooth caps and tiny packets of tooth polish. If they are wearing gloves that loosely conform to their hands, they may have some trouble grabbing these items. Latex, on the other hand, can provide the dexterity and tactile sensitivity required for this and similar tasks.

Latex gloves are extremely flexible, which offers a measure of tear and puncture resistance. This feature is beneficial in applications where sharp objects are used. In the nursing field, for instance, employees use syringes and shears. Additionally, the durability can ensure health care professionals can maintain a safe barrier between themselves and pathogens and avoid passing pathogens from their own bodies to patients.

Although exam-grade latex is more familiar to most consumers, there are also industrial-grade latex gloves, which offer unique advantages for certain applications in auto repair, manufacturing and other tasks.

Latex gloves come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. The extra thick latex gloves can be used longer and have less tactile sensitivity.

AMMEX imports and distributes top of the line wholesale latex gloves to fit your customer’s needs. Become a distributor today!
