Despite some unseasonably warm weather, winter starts today. Don’t be fooled, this year’s El Niño among the strongest on record, is expected to really pack a winter punch across the country. Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center issued the U.S. Winter Outlook favoring cooler and wetter weather in Southern Tier states with above-average temperatures most likely in the West and across the Northern Tier.  “A strong El Niño is in place and should exert a strong influence over our weather this winter,” said Mike Halpert, deputy director, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

While the danger from winter weather varies across the country, nearly all Americans, regardless of where they live, are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives. Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, wind-driven snow that lasts for several days. Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

Winter weather can be severe,unpredictable and a hazard, especially to thousands of workers who are exposed to cold outdoor work environments in the winter months.  A number of industries and occupations involve substantial outdoor cold exposure. Some workers may be required to work outdoors in cold environments for extended periods, for example, snow cleanup crews, sanitation workers, police officers and emergency response and recovery personnel, like firefighters, and emergency medical technicians.  However cold outdoor work is not the only hazardous work environment.

As with any workplace hazard, prevention is key to protecting workers and preventing cold-related injuries.

 When working in cold temperatures, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following essential safety tips for working in cold conditions:
  • Wear layers of loose clothing and avoid tight clothing, as it can restrict blood circulation.
  • Ensure the ears, face, hands and feet are properly covered.
  • Wear waterproof and insulated boots.
  • Move into warm locations during breaks.  If working in remote areas with no access to heat, use single use air activated heat packs to provide warmth for your hands and feet.
  • Include a thermometer and chemical hot packs in your first aid kit.
  • Workers should watch out for one another. Monitor your physical condition as well as your co-workers.

If this happens for a prolonged period of time, the cold eventually will use up all of the body’s energy, resulting in hypothermia, or an abnormally low body temperature. Symptoms vary from person to person, but early signs of hypothermia include shivering, fatigue and confusion. More advanced symptoms include blue skin, dilated pupils and loss of consciousness.  Studies suggest that more people are dying from hypothermia in the United States, a new government report shows, raising fresh worries for a nation that is facing the strongest El Niño, in twenty years.

Heavy snowfall and extreme cold storms can quickly immobilize an entire region.  The National Weather Service refers to winter storms as the “Deceptive Killers” because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. A lot of drama played out on the field, but what would the baseball experience be without hot dogs and peanuts, not to mention a properly groomed playing field? All of these activities require the right protective gear. Here are some of the aspects of stadium upkeep that require disposable gloves:

Concession stands
Where do fans go to buy their peanuts and Cracker Jacks? At the concession stand, of course! From popcorn to ice cream sold in tiny plastic ball caps, disposable gloves abound in concession stands. To avoid contamination, workers need disposable gloves, preferably ones that are easy to don and doff. When switching between tasks or even between customers, food service workers must always change their gloves. The right choice for these employees would be poly or vinyl gloves. Loose-fitting poly gloves are perfect in most circumstances, but in cases where greater dexterity is needed, closer-fitting vinyl gloves come in handy.

Groundskeepers
Most of the time, fans only see groundskeepers quickly resetting the field during the seventh inning stretch, but a lot of tender loving care goes into maintaining that field when players and spectators are absent. Most fields are still made of grass rather than AstroTurf, which means landscapers need to take care of it on a day-to-day basis. To keep a fresh green appearance, groundskeepers apply pesticides and other chemicals that could irritate or damage hands of workers. Nitrile gloves provide a protective barrier against chemicals and are still strong enough to protect from other irritants. In other situations, like removing thorny plants from the field, groundskeepers want a more heavy-duty work glove, like nitrile or latex dipped gloves.

Maintenance and cleanup
Once the crowds are gone, it is the staff’s duty to get rid of the peanut shells and plastic cups to make way for the next group of fans to fill the bleachers. According to data from Business Insider, the average MLB ballpark is 2.49 acres, or more than 100,000 square feet, with plenty of nooks and crannies workers need to look over. All in all, cleaning up a stadium is hard work, and it is not only the seats that need attention. Janitorial staff also need to attend to bathrooms and hallways, while concession staff scrub and sanitize their areas for the night. All of these activities require gloves of varying thicknesses.

Janitorial staff use harmful chemicals in the line of duty. Glass and metal cleaners that include hydrofluoric acid, nitrilotriacetate and phosphoric acid could cause burns or irritation if staff do not use a protective barrier. Bleach is also corrosive to the skin.

Vinyl gloves are a good option for janitorial staff because they are relatively low cost but still generally provide enough chemical resistance. Vinyl gloves protect hands against hydrofluoric, phosphoric and 10 percent concentrated nitric acids. Nitrile gloves provide even greater chemical resistance and are less likely to tear.

Handy Equipment for Fireworks Manufacturing


Independence Day is just around the corner, which means Americans around the country will be preparing to watch fireworks displays to celebrate. While many enjoy this holiday tradition, some people may not know most fireworks are still manufactured by hand to reduce the risk of factory explosions. This is because automated machinery has the potential to create sparks that would ignite the explosives.

As sales are increasing it is a great time to talk about how fireworks are made and why the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary in facilities.

A brief history of fireworks
First invented in China more than 1,000 years ago, fireworks have come a long way from sparks to large-scale aerial displays. Although China is still the leading producer of fireworks, the U.S. is one of the largest fireworks consumers. Aerial fireworks are typically made in an external shell filled with black powder and connected to a fuse.

People first started experimenting with colored fireworks during the Italian Renaissance. Different chemical compounds, typically metal salts, are responsible for the various colors. Strontium and lithium make red; calcium chloride makes orange; sodium salts produce yellow; barium compounds create green; copper compounds and chloride make blue; mixing strontium and copper makes purple; and aluminum, titanium and magnesium produce silver. Blues may be more difficult to create than other colors.

Appropriate gear for handling fireworks
Some of the metal salts used in fireworks may be carcinogenic to humans. Most aerial fireworks are made up of a cardboard cone with an igniter at the base, a fuse and stars, the pellets that add the color. The way the stars are arranged determines the pattern.

Latex and nitrile disposable gloves protect the hands from harmful materials used to create fireworks while providing dexterity that makes it easy to handle smaller parts.
